Before The Hunger Games and Divergent, there was The Giver: a 1983 award winning children’s novel by Lois Newbry.

Like most books about spunky, independent teenagers, it’s set in a dystopian future where seemingly-benevolent leaders have stopped kids from having fun and feeling things. We mean this literally as well. Everyone is on medication to stop them from seeing colours!

And playing the fearless leader is a sinister Meryl Streep.

The film’s mysterious title character is played by Jeff Bridges. Using an ancient technology known as ‘books’, he teaches our young hero (Aussie actor Brenton Thwaites) about Earth’s distant past.

The movie also stars Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood), Taylor Swift and Katie Holmes.

The Giver is in cinemas later this year
