Having spent months scouring Hollywood for the new cast of its Fantastic Four reboot, Fox Studios have reportedly found their brand new quartet of stars.
It’s been known since 2012 that Chronicle director Josh Trank would be brought on board to revive the franchise, which arrived dead on arrival with two underwhelming films in 2005 and 2007. But now, according to Deadline Hollywood, he’s assembled his stars in the formof Miles Teller, Michael B Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell.
The best known name on the list is probably Jamie Bell (above), the former Billy Elliot who’s shaped himself into a damn fine adult actor. He’s recent appeared in things like Spielberg’s Tintin, the Irvine Welsh adaptation Filth, as well as opposite Channing Tatum in the Roman action-adventure The Eagle.
He will apparently play Ben Grimm, aka The Thing: a gigantic rock monster whose strength is second only to The Hulk.
Miles Teller (above) has one of those familiar faces you will have seen somewhere in the past couple of years. He’s appeared in a couple of lads’ comedies like 21 and Over and That Awkward Moment, playing boys who love to get drunk with no consequences. His break-out performance came in last year’s acclaimed The Spectacular Now, in which he played a boy who loves to get drunk, but with real world consequences.
An emerging star who seemingly grew up on a steady diet of Vince Vaughn films, he’s primed to play Reed Richards, aka the super-stretchy Mr Fantastic.
Michael B Jordan (above) is another actor who found his break-out role in 2013, as the lead in the searing Fruitvale Station. His omission from the Best Actor category at the Oscars ranks among the year’s biggest snubs and flubs. TV fans will remember him as Wallace from The Wire (“Where’s Wallace at, String?”) or as the quarterback of East Dillon High School’s football team on Friday Night Lights.
He will be playing Johnny Storm –aka The Human Torch– who can set himself alight like some sort of 80s stuntman in an asbestos suit.
And last of all is Kate Mara (above), who last appeared on some show called House of Cards, which we frankly have never hear of. Slated to appear in the upcoming sci-fi thriller Transcendence, Mara is the sister of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara. Their family are the owners the New York Giants. Not that it’s relevant in any way: just a fun piece of trivia.
She will be playing Sue Storm, aka The Invisible Woman, who has precisely the same powers as Violet in The Incredibles.
In almost all previous incarnations of the FF, Sue has been Johnny Storm’s sister. However, the choice of casting here will either mean that: a) there’s going to be an awkward line of dialogue that mentions how their dad got remarried; or b) they’ll dismiss the fact that their names are the same by chalking it up to coincidence. There’s also an option c) but it involves some seriously insensitive Tropic Thunder-style make-up.
There they are: your all-new and younger-than-ever Fantastic Four!
This Fantastic Four reboot is currently penciled in for a June 2015 release.
