Like a late-period Al Pacino, the Johnny Depp of the past few years isn’t known for his subtlety. But who needs nuance when Depp continues to be so strange and fun on-screen.

In this first trailer for his upcoming film Mortdecai, Depp plays the title character: a eccentric British gentleman and roguish art dealer. He looks like he’s having a great time.

Check out the trailer:

Based on a character from a series of novels dating back to the 70s, Mortdecai’s trailer has the tone of an Connery-era James Bond spoof. Well, the Shirley Bassey soundtrack and throwback plot would suggest that.

According to IMDb, the film will see our hero searching for a stolen painting that’s reportedly linked to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.

Depp is joined by a cluster of stars, including Ewan McGregor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Goldblum and Paul Bettany.

All we can say is that the movie looks like an awful lot of fun.

Mortdecai is in cinemas January 2014
