In Rush, actors Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl take on the task of portraying Formula One icons James Hunt and Niki Lauda. While both of them are fine actors, more than up to the task of getting under the skins of their characters, they also manage to muster a decent physical resemblance to their real life counterparts.
Well, that’s not 100% true: Hemsworth’s Hunt looks a lot like Thor, which actually plays well into his playboy reputation. Bruhl, however, is a different matter. With the help of some false teeth –and later on, some significant makeup— he bears a decent resemblance to the Austrian champion. Check it:
I mean, that’s pretty good, right?
Well anyway, here are 13 more cases of actors playing real-life figures. We’ve rated them according to their likeliness: are they up to the high standards of Madame Toussauds in London or are they worthy of Louis Toussaud’s less-celebrated Waxwork Museum in Great Yarmouth:
(These are both supposed to be Prince William, by the way.)
1. Anthony Hopkins as Richard Nixon (Nixon)
Verdict: Apart from the hairpiece, Hopkins doesn’t look much like tricky dick.
2. Daniel Day Lewis as Abraham Lincoln (Lincoln)
Verdict: For this role, the method-man physically transformed into Honest Abe!
3. Ben Kingsley as Gandhi (Gandhi)
Verdict: Could you imagine any other actor playing India’s great liberator?
4. Gary Oldman as Sid Vicious (Sid and Nancy)
Verdict: He doesn’t bear a true resemblance, but he’s certainly got Sid’s sneer down pat.
5. Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos (Monster)
Verdict: In some scenes, the South African beauty is practically indistinguishable from the infamous serial killer.
6. Gary Busey as Buddy Holly (The Buddy Holly Story)
Verdict: We’ve never heard Buddy Holly described as having a manic stare and chewing-gum teeth.
7. Leonardo DiCaprio as J Edgar Hoover (J Edgar)
Verdict: He actually looks like a wax version of Jon Voight. Albert Finney (inset) would’ve been a great choice for the older Hoover.
8. Madonna as Eva Perón (Evita)
Verdict: They’re both blonde and have outstretched arms. That’s pretty much where the resemblance ends.
9. Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs (Jobs)
Verdict: The film may have been panned by critics, but you can’t deny this uncanny connection.
10. Jim Carrey as Andy Kaufman (Man on the Moon)
Verdict: While we respect Carrey as an actor, in this film he looks like ‘Jim Carrey playing a character’
11. Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison (The Doors)
Verdict: On appearance alone, this is the greatest piece of casting….EVER.
12. Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles (Ray)
Verdict: Foxx deservedly won an Oscar for his flawless interpretation of the music legend.
13. Michael Sheen as Tony Blair (The Queen)
Verdict: Sheen’s a great actor, but seriously — he looks nothing like Tony Blair.
14. Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher (The Iron Lady)
Verdict: The pearls, the teeth, the hair and the blue dress are all perfect. Streep’s facial expression is the real problem. Her smile is too genuine to ever pass for Thatcher.
