It’s never occurred to us before, but Lana Del Rey is to music what Angelina Jolie is to movies. They’re both sexy, aloof and behave like emotional vacuums. So it makes complete sense that the Video Games singer would provide the music for this latest trailer to Disney’s Maleficent.
In one of many references to 1959′s animated Sleeping Beauty, Del Rey sings ‘Once Upon a Dream’ over images of Jolie’s titular witch, as she emerges from shadows and glowers (which she does more than once). We also see a glimpse of characters from the beloved Disney Cartoon including the king -now played by District 9‘s Sharlto Copley- and the three fairies, played by the awesome British trio of Lesley Manville, Imelda Staunton and Juno Temple.
To more cynical eyes than ours, this could be seen as Disney’s attempt to do Wicked or Oz: The Great and Powerful with one of their own properties. They’re basically all classic stories retold from the perspective of the villains (Joe Wright is even in the process of making a Peter Pan story that does the same with Captain Hook). This is pretty much what we have to look forward to over the next few years.
The good news with Maleficent, however, is the talent involved behind the camera. The credited screenwriters have between them written 1991′s Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and the classic Batman: The Animated Series from the 90s.
The only thing that’s really going against this film is the fact that no-one can pronounce its title.
Maleficent will be in Cinemas 30 May
