Garrett Hedlund to Play Hook in Joe Wright’s ‘Pan’

When Atonement director Joe Wright announced that his next film was going to based on JM Barrie’s Peter Pan, we really didn’t know what to think about it. Haven’t we seen that story played out from so many angles already?

We had the the definitive Disney animated version; Finding Neverland which uncovered the tragic story behind the story; and Hook, a ‘what happened after’ tale about a grown-up Peter Pan.

But now, with the casting of Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund as Hook, we’re beginning to see that Wright’s film with be a prequel/origin film. According to murmurs, the story will place soon after Peter’s arrival to Neverland, where he allies himself with a young Hook against the villainous pirate Blackbeard (to be played by Hugh Jackman).

So in effect, this is the Wicked/Oz the Great and Powerful to Peter Pan’s Wizard of Oz.

We imagine that it will all take place before Hook had his hand bitten off by an alligator, which will beg the question of why everyone calls him that.

In his short 9-year career, Hedlund has already racked up a number of respectable credits in his career, with roles in the music drama Country Strong and the Kerouac adaptation On the Road. He can next be seen in the Coen Brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis (opening tomorrow) as a stoic, country poet.

But now that casting of Hook is out of the way, there’s only one more thing we want to know: who’s gonna play Rufio??
