In Hollywood, things always come in pairs or more. So when it was announced that they Brett Ratner was making a Hercules movie starring Dwayne Johnson, it should have come as no surprise that there was another Hercules film also in the pipeline. Renny Harlin, the Swedish action director best known for making Die Hard 2 and Deep Blue Sea, has thrown down the gauntlet in the form of Hercules: The Legend Begins.
Taking on the title role is star Kellan Lutz. You know — him from off the Twilight films. And although the title suggests he’s playing the legendary son of Zeus, this trailer bears no resemblance to any Hercules or Heracles myth we’ve ever heard.
Remind us again: during which of his labours did Herc get sold into slavery and become a famous gladiator?
Very few attempts are made to hide this film’s influences — namely 300, Gladiator and TV’s Spartacus. In fact, Liam McIntyre (Spartacus himself) appears on the cast list, perhaps as a way to justify this ‘homage’. But considering its tiny production budget, the film looks entirely decent from a visual stand-point. The big question is: will its untested star be able to withstand the Dwayne Johnson juggernaut heading his way next year?
Hercules: The Legend Begins is UK cinemas next August
