After months of speculation as to who would play the fully-rounded character of Christian Grey for the adaptation of the popular sex book 50 Shades of Grey, it was revealed recently that the part would be played by Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam. That particular decision sparked off a minor online kerfuffle from certain sections of the internet. Those particular fans of the erotic triptych went so far as to launch a petition to oust Hunnam from the project.
Well you know what? You win, internet
It was announced over the weekend that Hunnam would be stepping down from the film, citing scheduling issues with his Sons of Anarchy commitments. But in the film industry, when someone says they’re leaving because of scheduling, you know it’s definitely not because of scheduling.
Who will replace him?
Now that there’s a beefcake-shaped hole in this movie, you will no doubt be hearing loads about Matt Bomer. Best known as one of the ‘less-talkative’ male strippers from Magic Mike, Bomer has long been mentioned in connection with the character. This is apparently due to the fact he’s a dead ringer for the character (as described by E.L. James’ Faulknerian prose).
If you think about it, this isn’t the kind of role any serious actor wants to be associated with. Suggestions that Ryan Gosling is going to take the part is total rubbish. Unless they offer him an inordinate amount of money, he’s not going to do anything to jeopardise his credibility.
The most likely outcome is that they’ll cast a relative unknown. Robert Pattinson had next to no profile when he joined Twilight and the producers of 50 Shades will have been looking to that franchise as a template for success. A television actor like Bomer or The Vampire Diaries‘ Ian Somerhalder are likelier candidates than anyone on the A-list.
Another name recently mentioned is True Blood‘s Alexander Skarsgård. Like Somerhalder, the Swedish actor has in established fan base from the HBO vampire show that heavily coincides with 50 Shades devotees. But in reality, Skarsgård will be reluctant to appear as brooding eye candy in another franchise with insane fans, no matter how good the money is.
