In this week’s chilling new release The Quiet Ones, Jared Harris plays an Oxford professor seeking to debunk the notion of spiritual possession. You’ll definitely recognise Harris, either from his role in Mad Men and as Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

But what you might not know is that he’s the son of the late actor Richard Harris.

A notorious hell raiser back in his day, Harris Sr. is probably best remembered two late-career roles: Emperor Marcus Aurelias in Gladiator and Professor Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies.

But you know, it’s not uncommon for actors to follow in their fathers’ footsteps.

Here are 13 more actors with famous acting dads:

1. Angelina Jolie

His biggest hits include Midnight Cowboy, Deliverance, The Champ and Mission: Impossible. He can currently be seen in the TV show Ray Donovan.

If the tabloids are to be believed, the pair of them have somewhat of a strained relationship. However, Voight did play Jolie’s dad in the first Tomb Raider movie.

2. Kiefer Sutherland

When it comes to classic films, Donald Sutherland’s CV is an embarrassment of riches: The Dirty Dozen, MASH and Don’t Look Now are just the tip of the iceberg. He’s currently stars in the Hunger Games movies as the sinister president.

3. Michael Douglas

4. Lily Collins

Who’s your daddy? Phil Collins.

Lily has been troubling the edges of superstardom for the past few years with a couple of decent performances in poorly received movies (Mirror Mirror, City of Bones). Her dad was also an actor-of-sorts, starring in the Buster (a comedy based on one of the Great Train Robbers).

Thankfully, he also had a small sideline in music to fall back on.

5. Laura Dern

Ol’ Bruce belonged to the same generation of actors as Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper; cutting his teeth in films by B-Movie king Roger Corman. With over 80 movie credits to his name, Dern’s performance in Nebraska was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar just this year.

His daughter Laura’s most prominent role was as Dr Ellie Sadler in Jurassic Park, though you might also know her from David Lynch’s movies like Blue Velvet and Inland Empire.

6. Jamie Lee Curtis

Her mother is actress Janet Leigh, whose demise in Psycho is perhaps the most iconic movie death of all time.

7. Colin Hanks

Who’s your daddy? Tom Hanks

Over the past decade or so, Tom Hanks’ oldest son has picked up a fair few credits on film and TV: things like King Kong, Orange County or the 6th season of Dexter. He was on excellent form earlier this year in TV’s Fargo, earning an Emmy nomination for his performance as a small-town cop.

Colin isn’t the only Hanks boy in show business. His half brother Chet released a rap record a few years back, the quality of which is somewhat questionable.

8. Anjelica Huston

Having directed or starred in some of the best movies of  all time (The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Chinatown), John Huston also left a legacy in the form of his children. Anjelica Huston’s half brother is the actor Danny Huston (The Proposition) while her nephew Jack Huston plays Richard Harrow on Boardwalk Empire.

9. Jeff Bridges

Surely you recognise him from Airplane! and the Hot Shots movies. Of course you do! (and don’t call him Shirley)

Jeff’s older brother is the actor Beau Bridges; they starred together as the piano-playing siblings in 1989’s The Fabulous Baker Boys.

10. Charlie Sheen

The pair of them played father and son in Oliver Stone’s Wall Street. Born to an Irish mother and a Spanish father, Martin Sheen’s actual name is Ramón Estévez while Charlie’s birth name is Carlos Estévez.

Who’s your daddy? Stellan Skarsgård

Eric the vampire from True Blood is actually a Swede who comes from a big acting family. His father Stellan has been a Hollywood mainstay for decades, playing anything from professors to villains. Most recently, he’s been popping up in the Thor movies.

Two of Stellan’s other sons are also making a splash on American TV. Bill Skarsgård currently stars on Hemlock Grove, while Gustaf Skarsgård is one of the leads on Vikings.

12. Rafe Spall

Who’s your daddy? Timothy Spall

Timothy Spall became one of Britain’s most unlikely leading men thanks to his regular collaborations with director Mike Leigh. He won the best actor award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for playing landscape artist JMW Turner in Leigh’s latest film, Mr Turner.

His son has appeared in a load of movies: from Hot Fuzz to last year’s Life of Pi. It’s safe to say that his star is still on the rise.

13. Mira Sorvino

Who’s your daddy? Paul Sorvino

Sorvino Sr. made a career out of playing both cops and gangsters, most notably as Paulie Cicero in Goodfellas. His daughter Mira won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite but to us, she’ll always be the star of Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.
