Living here in the UK, we know nothing about cheerleaders apart from what we’ve seen in American movies and TV shows. But we gather that in the States, joining your high school’s pep squad is a rite of passage for many girls.
It should probably come as no surprise that many of today’s biggest stars once donned their school colours and shook a pom-pom or two.
Here are 10 stars who used to ask local sporting fans to ‘give them an A’.
1. Sandra Bullock
After 30 years, Sandra Bullock still looks the same. What’s her secret??
2. Kirsten Dunst
Dunst was perfectly cast in Bring It On, having spent 4 years on her high school cheering squad.
3. Alicia Silverstone
Years before she starred in Clueless, Silverstone was still a total Betty, showing her pride for San Mateo High School.
4. Jennifer Lawrence
We have no idea why this photo is in black and white. It was definitely taken in the 2000s.
5. Halle Berry
These moves likely prepared her to star in Catwoman. Actually, who are we kidding? Nothing could have prepared her to star in that awful movie (that is available on blinkbox).
6. Kirk Douglas
This is Kirk Douglas in HIGH SCHOOL! He looks like he’s already 40 here!
7. Phyllis Smith
As one of the stars of The Office, Phyllis Smith only broke into the acting game late in life. Back in the 70s, she was briefly a burlesque dancer (see above) as well as a cheerleader for the NFL’s St Louis Cardinals!
Years later, Madonna would turn back to the varsity skirts and pom-poms for her Give Me All Your Luvin’ video.
9. Meryl Streep
If they gave awards out for cheerleading, teenage Meryl Streep probably won them every year.
10. George W. Bush
Okay, so he’s not technically an actor (unless you count his appearance in Fahrenheit 9/11) but we really wanted to show you President Bush in action. In fact, he was a cheerleader all throughout high school and at Yale.
Have any of you actually been cheerleaders? If so, come on the comments board and tell us what it was like? Did you ever ‘bring it on’?
